Esophageal Reflux Treatment

February 27th, 2007

Esophageal reflux is another term for gastroesophageal reflux disease, better known as acid reflux disease. This irritating and sometimes extremely painful condition is caused when gastric contents on the stomach are allowed to entering the esophagus.

Since the lining of the esophagus is not meant to handle the caustic nature of stomach acid, it is quick to respond to the acidic intrusion in the form of symptoms ranging from mild heartburn to extreme burning or even ripping sensations of pain.

There are many foods that have a tendency to trigger esophageal reflux. Chocolate and dairy products are among some of the most common exacerbating elements of acid reflux triggers. Cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, onions, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and broccoli are also known culprits.

Foods that are very spicy or high in fat can also cause heartburn, though these are more likely to be contributing factors for those who do not normally consume these types of food.

Try reducing the intake of these types of food. Also, many people can eat some of these foods early in the day, but have trouble with increased acid production when they’re eaten closer to bed time.

There are also other factors that may play a part in your esophageal reflux condition, such as hiatus hernia, hypercalcemia or Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. The later two diseases cause an increased production of gastrin, which leads to increased acidity in the stomach.

Foods to Avoid to Lower Cholesterol

February 27th, 2007

One past time that people love to do is eating. This can happen at anytime aside from the three basic meals of the day whenever the person is craving for something.

Whenever the individual buys the snack or meal to suit that craving, little attention is paid on how much cholesterol the food has. In fact, a lot of those of the dishes made in fast food joint are unhealthy which has prompted McDonald’s to print the calories, cholesterol and other things on each product given to the customer.

The growing number of those who are overweight and obese has caught the attention of doctors since this means there are a lot of people now who are considered to be high risk of suffering from heart disease or stroke in the United States.

Aside from advising people to visit the doctor annually, many are suggesting to make some lifestyle changes before it is too late. This usually means making some changes in the food being eaten since this is the only way to control the amount of cholesterol going in the system.

So what type of foods must be avoided to have lower levels of cholesterol in the body? The first is reducing the quantity of red meat being consumed. A good example is steak, ham and bacon that is high in fat.

Giving it up will be difficult so eating smaller portions should be done especially for those who are moderate or at a high risk of getting a heart disease or a stroke.

Fried food such as hamburgers and fries should also be avoided. The ingredients and oil used in cooking these things are also high in cholesterol that could be dangerous to one’s health. This also includes pre-packaged frozen meals that a lot of people will just throw in the microwave after a long day at the office.

High Fibre Diets

February 27th, 2007

There are many reasons why high fibre diets are good for you, but the main one is that in terms of overall health and fitness, high fibre diets will promote only the best in you. Other reasons can be anything ranging from constipation, to hemorrhoids, to something called diverticular disease. These are all good and sound reasons for switching to high fibre diets. But one of the best as far as I am concerned is that high fibre diets can assist you in losing weight.

It can’t get any better than that really. A diet that’s not only good for you, but that actually promotes steady and regular weight loss, and includes most of the foods that I like to eat. I confess that I like my burger and fries as much as the next person, but I also adore fruits and grains, so I don’t have a problem with changing my diet to one of the high fibre diets.

One of the advantages that you gain with these high fibre diets is that they really help to fill you up during meal times so that along with the nutritional value of the high fibre diet you also have the benefit of eating less. You can probably see now why I’m such an advocate of these high fibre diets.

There are many things that you can include in your high fibre diets, you don’t need to limit yourself to a stick of celery for lunch with a cup of tepid water. Many of the foods are really a joy to eat and if you prepare them properly they will taste just as good as their greasy counterparts. Okay well not as good, but really good in a different way.
